Anime Hajime Impressions: World Trigger – Episodes 63 to 70

World Trigger

Episodes 63 to 70

During the winter 2021 season, the popular science-fiction action anime World Trigger received a long-awaited sequel. In addition, a third installment is scheduled for a fall 2021 airing.

For context, the first entry in this ten-part Impressions series released in September 2021.

Needless to say, World Trigger fans must be happy (about season two, not, necessarily about what Anime Hajime is doing). Granted, I can only guess at that since I can’t consider myself a World Trigger fan; I have not seen the show – yet. Nevertheless, I have heard this series come up in conversation once or twice, and I can appreciate how exciting a continuation must be.

As such, isn’t it our role here at Anime Hajime to highlight the newest World Trigger chapters? It wouldn’t be right of us to ignore big-name titles.

There is just one problem – World Trigger season one tapped out at 73 EPISODES.

That…that’s a bit daunting. Nevertheless, I intend to do it, and I would like YOU to join me for the ride.

From September 7 to November 9, 2021, Anime Hajime will be showcasing World Trigger, episode by episode. Follow along and witness as I either grow more and more excited or descend into utter madness.

Then on November 16, 2021, watch out for the official Anime Hajime Review: World Trigger.

With all that said, let’s dive into World Trigger, episodes 63 to 70.

Episode 63 – A Reversed Future

Episode Synopsis

Mikumo Squad, Xeno, and the rest of Border are running out of time. If they don’t break through Giev and Charon’s defenses soon, the nearby town and all its citizens will die in a firey Trion explosion.

Although shaken by the revelation of his true identity, Giev desperately tries to hold onto his sanity and not become Charon’s pawn. However, Charon is well on the way to breaking Giev’s resistance.

Additionally, having been absorbed into Giev’s monstrous Trion body, Lilith does what she can to hinder Charon’s progress. But the little robot is quickly breaking through, and once that happens, it will all be over.

Osamu Mikumo and Yuma Kuga, with the help of Xeno, who has finally decided to trust them, locate Giev’s weak point. Little does anyone realize, according to Yuuichi Jin, this one moment has drastically altered the future.

Osamu tries to target the spot, but his own Trion Energy is not enough. Fortunately, Chika Amatori meets up with Osamu and adds her power to her captain’s. The combination allows Giev a moment to take hold of Charon, but it is too late. The explosion is imminent.

Luckily, Border’s top teams arrive on the scene just in time to contain the blast within a Trion barrier. After a hard struggle, our heroes eliminate the threat.

And as they promised, Mikumo Squad sees Xeno and Lilith off once their ship has completed its repairs.

Episode Impressions

While I do like Osamu, and this episode was not the first example, he is way too protective of Chika. I know he feels he needs to look after her, but she is a fully-fledged Border agent just like him and Yuma. Not to mention her power utterly outclasses Osamu’s.

I realize this series is setting it up to say Osamu relies too much on Yuma’s strength. But keep in mind, we are sixty episodes deep in a series that, honestly, should have probably finished some time ago.

Episode 64 – A Prisoner from Aftokrator

Episode Synopsis

Following the ordeal with Xeno and Lilith, Mikumo Squad has little time to rest. The B-Rank Wars are about to recommence. And now more than ever, Osamu Mikumo and his team are prime targets.

As Osamu is preparing for the next match, he notices that Yuma Kuga and Tamakoma’s commander are heading off to Border HQ. Osamu joins, but when he steps into the car that will take them, he finds a most unexpected passenger waiting inside – the captured Hyuse of Aftokrator.

Tamakoma is escorting Hyuse to HQ so that the top brass can interrogate him.

In the interrogation, Hyuse refuses to corporate. Still, with the help of multiple agents with Side Effects, HQ realizes there is little they can get out of Hyuse.

Episode Impressions

I wonder why the first half of this episode had to be a recap. It’s almost as if this show took a ten-episode break while it was in the middle of doing something.

That aside, I am glad to see the Rank Wars start up again. I thought they had finished for a while there, and we just never got to see the ending.

Episode 65 – No. 1 Shooter, Masataka Ninomiya

Episode Synopsis

While still at Border HQ, Yuma Kuga and Osamu Mikumo are escorted to the research department. There, Border’s engineers managed to revive the mind of the murdered Aftokrator captain Enera. Using Yuma’s ability to know when anyone is lying, Border learns there is a way to reach Aftokrator and rescue everyone taken during the invasion.

Back at Tamakoma’s base, a visitor is waiting to see Osamu and Chika Amatori. It is the captain of Ninomiya Squad Masataka Ninomiya.

Masataka informs Osamu and Chika he is investigating one of his former subordinates who stole Triggers from Border and went through one of the gates. Among those who joined in the theft was Chika’s brother, Rinji.

Since this is the first news about Chika’s brother, Osamu asks Masataka to tell them everything he knows. However, Masataka refuses; the information he has is only necessary for a possible away team. And Masataka warns Osamu, as Mikumo Squad is now, they will never make the cut.

Not wanting to hold his friends back, Osamu resolves to grow stronger once and for all.

 Episode Impressions

There was a ton of information in this episode, and I know I didn’t cover everything in the Episode Summary.

If I had to guess, we are never going to go through a Gate in this season. No, I’m willing to bet World Trigger is saving that story for the next two chapters.

That said, it would surprise me if Mikumo Squad’s performance in the next Rank War match doesn’t qualify them to join the away team.

Episode 66 – Sharpened Fangs

Episode Synopsis

Osamu Mikumo, Yuma Kuga, and Chika Amatori split up to prepare for their forthcoming Rank War match.

Although Mikumo Squad has shown great promise so far, their next opponents will be Border’s top B-Rank teams. Thus, our heroes can’t afford to slow down.

Episode Impressions

Aside from a few bits of information, this was mostly an introductory episode. It still surprises me how many Border agents we have not met yet. Given the size of this cast, I would have thought we’ve seen everyone at least once.

Episode 67 – The Battle of the B-Rank Top Teams

Episode Synopsis

Osamu Mikumo, Yuma Kuga, and Chika Amatori split up to prepare for their forthcoming Rank War match.

Although Mikumo Squad has shown great promise so far, their next opponents will be Border’s top B-Rank teams. Thus, our heroes can’t afford to slow down.

Having done all they can, Mikumo Squad’s next battle begins.

Episode Impressions

I copy-and-pasted the episode summary from Episode 66 because this was mostly just a continuation.

I could have taken the time to cover the nitty-gritty details of this episode, but, frankly, it’s hard to care. After all, if you’re anything like me, you’re waiting for the actual match.

Episode 68 – The Targeted Tamakoma

Episode Synopsis

The Rank War match begins, and all sides must contend with a tricky snowfall.

For his team, Osamu Mikumo puts a lot of faith into his recent training; he is determined to prove he can hold his own in a fight. Still, Osamu knows his opponents are far stronger than anyone he has yet faced.

Elsewhere, Yuma Kuga tries to meet up with Osamu. However, as he expected, the rest of the combatants target him. And among the most worrisome is Masato Kageura, an immensely tricky Attacker who can read other people’s emotions through his Side Effect.

With Yuma tied up, Osamu tries to lead the battle to a more advantageous position. Although he manages to do that, his actions lure in the bulk of the other fighters. A free-for-all breaks out, but most everyone ignores Osamu.

Thinking this is his best chance, Osamu readies an attack.

But at that moment, an unlikely shot comes from Azuma Squad’s captain and Sniper, Haruaki Azuma. The blast rips through Osamu’s Trion body and immediately knocks him out of the fight.

Episode Impressions

Losing is fine; losing can build character. This was a really good episode, as well as a surprising one.

I always thought Osamu might face a setback like this, but to have it happen as suddenly as it did, caught me off guard. This match is now shaping up to be a total rout for Mikumo Squad. I can’t wait to see how they grow from this.

Episode 69 – A Battle Royal

Episode Synopsis

With their leader gone, Yuma Kuga and Chika Amatori realize they are fighting a losing battle. Fortunately, Osamu Mikumo successfully gathered many opponents into one spot, allowing Chika to blast them all away. Unfortunately, Chika has never been able to shoot at other people, and the other teams, knowing this, don’t think anything will happen.

They are wrong.

Chika sends a massive Trion energy wave their way, flattening the surrounding area. Still, Chika’s nerves prevented her from taking an accurate shot, and she failed to get a single hit. But this one move demonstrates that her biggest limitation is cracking.

With her position compromised, Chika Bails Out of the fight (preventing the other teams from winning an easy point), leaving Yuma alone.

A four-way battle royal commences, and the resulting melee is chaos. Fighters drop left and right until Yuma comes face to face with Masato Kageura.

Episode 70 – A Captain’s Duty

Episode Synopsis

Having been badly hindered throughout the fight, Yuma Kuga is in rough shape when he goes up against Masato Kageura. As a result, the ensuing battle was always going to have one outcome – Yuma’s defeat.

For the first time, Mikumo Squad failed to win a Rank War match.

This resounding loss causes Osamu Mikumo to re-evaluate his entire way of thinking. He realizes that his physical strength will never match Yuma’s, nor will his energy output come close to Chika Amatori’s. However, Yuma and Chika unquestionably acknowledge Osamu as their one and only captain. Therefore, Osamu must concern himself with what is best for the group.

Still aiming to reach A-Rank and qualify for the away team, Osamu tries a desperate action – he asks Yuuichi Jin to join Mikumo Squad.

Yuuichi refuses, but not because the idea doesn’t interest him. Instead, Yuuichi admits there are other things he must do, and much of the losses Osamu, Yuma, and Chika experienced during the invasion resulted from his inaction.

But, Yuuichi does tell Osamu there is someone else who would be a much better fit to join Mikumo Squad. All Osamu needs to do is think outside the box, and the answer will come to him.

Episode Impressions

With this season rapidly coming to a close, I am left wondering how this chapter will end.

I won’t go into details to spare those following along with this series, but I know who Osamu gets to join his team. I didn’t go looking for the answer; it just sort of came into my eyesight while I was keeping track of details.

Still, I can’t imagine a fully operational Mikumo Squad will come into being by the time we hit episode 73. But we will see.

Final Thoughts

Episode one seems like such a long time ago.

Although World Trigger hasn’t been perfect, more often than not, it has been fun. And if this last batch of episodes indicates anything, it’s that this series prioritizes character growth above all else. And I approve.

I can’t wait to see how this all comes to a close.
