Pokémon Indigo League

Episodes 41 to 45

Our heroes have journeyed far since their adventure began, and they have grown quite accustomed to the road. In their latest dealings, Ash, Misty, Brock, and Pikachu have had to:

  • Wake a snoozing Snorlax
  • Save a town from two waring gyms
  • Help an amateur magician perfect his act
  • Build the confidence of a timid Paras

But most notably, the group gained a follower – a headstrong and determined Jigglypuff. Now wherever they roam, Ash and his friends will never be too far from the musical stylings of the pink puffball.

Pokémon Indigo League

Episode 46
Japanese Title: ふっかつ!? かせきポケモン!
Romaji Title: Fukkatsu!? Kaseki Pokemon!
English Title: Attack of the Prehistoric Pokémon
Episode Synopsis

Our heroes have reached Grampa Canyon, where they run into a massive archeological dig. Hoping to find some Pokémon fossils, the group eagerly joins in the excavation. However, they overhear Team Rocket conspiring to blow up the canyon and steal what the diggers have collected.

Misty and Brock run to inform the authorities while Ash and Pikachu try to stop Team Rocket.

For Ash, it becomes a race against time when Team Rocket lights the fuse to the explosions. But try as he might, Ash (with Team Rocket in hot pursuit) cannot catch up with light. The bomb goes off, and the resulting explosion traps Ash and Team Rocket in a dark cave.

Inside, the enemies run into a hoard of prehistoric Pokémon, including an enraged Aerodactyl. Ash and Team Rocket throw everything they can at the ancient dragon. In desperation, Ash hopes his Charmeleon will fight, but no luck; Charmeleon still has no interest in listening to his trainer.

Then, in a stroke of luck (if that’s how you want to look at it), Aerodactyl knocks Charmeleon to the ground, thus angering the Fire-type Pokémon. With Charmeleon in the fight, though still not fully listening to him, Ash goes after Aerodactyl. But rather quickly, the dragon picks Ash up in its claws and bursts out of the cave.

On the surface, Misty and Brock brought people who could help, but there is little they can do against Aerodactyl. Fortunately, Jigglypuff appears, and Misty hurryingly sets up a stage for the little Pokémon to sing.

Meanwhile, a furious Charmeleon looks on as Aerodactyl thrashes Ash around. Then something amazing happens. Charmeleon evolves into the fire-lizard’s final form, Charizard, and flies after Ash.

The sky battle is intense, and it gives Jigglypuff time to get ready. Once set, Jigglypuff sings its soothing lullaby, which puts everyone, including Aerodactyl, to sleep.

Aerodactyl releases Ash right on top of a mysterious egg and slinks back to its cave.

Once everyone revives from Jigglypuff’s song, Ash, his friends, and the egg continue down the road.

Episode 47
Japanese Title: ラッキーのカルテ
Romaji Title: Rakkī no Karute
English Title: A Chansey Operation
Episode Synopsis

While on a rest, Pikachu is rummaging in the treetop. Then, without warning, Pikachu falls out of the tree and is very sick. Our heroes rush to find a Pokémon Center, but there isn’t one nearby. With no other choice, the group heads to a hospital for humans in the hopes of finding someone to look at Pikachu.

At the hospital, the group meets Dr. Proctor, whose clinic is closed for the day. After some begging (and a bit of Misty’s charm), Dr.Proctor agrees. Even though he doesn’t know much about Pokémon health, he deduces that something is stuck in Pikachu’s throat. Sure enough, he pulls out an apple that Pikachu had found.

As Ash and his friends are about to leave, the hospital gets a call from Nurse Joy. A massive accident had just occurred, and there is no room to care for all the injured Pokémon at the Center. Therefore, Nurse Joy asks Dr. to offer up his hospital. Unable to say “no,” Dr. Proctor recruits Ash, Misty, and Brock as temporary assistants.

Soon, the rush of Pokémon comes in, and to the group’s surprise, Team Rocket’s Pokémon were in the accident as well. Although there is some hostility at first, the two sides agree to put aside their differences to ensure all the Pokémon recover.

Slowly but surely, the team gets the Pokémon back into tip-top shape. Aiding their efforts is the hospital’s resident Chancy, who is a natural caretaker.

Suddenly, a slip of the hand causes a syringe filled with a strong anesthetic plunges into Dr. Proctor’s arm. The Doc falls asleep and will be out of commission for a while. At this time, Team Rocket decides to steal the sick Pokémon.

Ash, Misty, and Brock try to stop the villains, but the surprise allegiance chance caught them off guard. Thus, Jessie and James manage to pin down our heroes. But by some miracle, Dr. Proctor revives and, with the help of Chancy, succeeds in pushing Team Rocket back.

With the ordeal over, Ash and his friends bid Dr. Proctor farewell.

Episode 48
Japanese Title: ガーディとコジロウ
Romaji Title: Gādi to Kojirō
English Title: Holy Matrimony!
Episode Synopsis

While our heroes are traveling, they come by a missing-person poster. To their shock, the person on the poster looks exactly like Team Rocket’s James. Then from out of nowhere, a fancy limousine pulls up and whisks Ash and his friends off to an extravagant mansion.

In utter awe of the place, the residence’s butler explains that Master James’s parents have just died, and unless James marries soon, the family’s fortune will go to charity. Outside, Team Rocket hears this announcement. Jessie and Meowth see a chance to become incredibly wealthy, but James appears hesitant.

Back inside the mansion, our heroes wonder how they can deliver the message to James. As they set off, they happen to run into Team Rocket. It turns out that this home is indeed James’s and that he ran away from it many years ago. Ash tries to explain the situation, but James flatly refuses.

Unwilling to accept James’s hesitation, Jessie and Meowth force their friend to suck it up and get married for the money. The two drag James inside and pretend to have him accept the offer of marriage.

At that moment, James’s parents appear. They were not dead and – as James feared – had put on this elaborate show to get their son to return. James tries to run for it, but the butler restrains him.

James’s parents lead their son, Jessie, and Meowth (Ash and his friends are following close behind) to James’s fiancée, Jessebelle – who could have been Jessie’s identical twin.

Jessebelle brings Team Rocket – with James struggling the entire way – down to the vaults. Once there, Jessebelle reveals the full scope of the situation. The reason why James had run off was due to his adamant desire NOT to marry Jessebelle.

The butler then tosses Jessie and Meowth (as well as Ash and his friends) out. Wonder how to save James, the group hears a bark coming from the adjacent dog house (which itself is a large residence). Bursting from the doors is James’s oldest friend, Growlie the Growlithe.

Growlie charges into the mansion and drags James back out. Along with everyone else, the two board themselves up into Growlie’s house. However, Jessebelle and her trusty Vileplume break down the wall. The intruders blast Jessie and Meowth away, leaving only James, Growlie, Ash, Misty, Brock, and Pikachu.

With a combined attack from Growlie and Pikachu, the team chases Jessebelle off.

Having stopped the marriage, James rushes to find Jessie and Meowth. Upon doing so, he declares that he would prefer a free life on the road with them over one of privilege any day.

Episode 49
Japanese Title: カモネギのカモ
Romaji Title: Kamonegi no Kamo
English Title: So Near, Yet So Farfetch'd
Episode Synopsis

Ash, Misty, and Brock are taking a short break while hunting for the rare Pokémon Farfetch’d. The boys go off to collect water while Misty stays behind.

After a while, to Misty’s amazement, a Farfetch’d comes marching up the road. Wanting to rub a catch in Ash’s face, Misty goes after the Pokémon.

The little bird is fast, and Misty has trouble keeping it in her sights. As she turns a corner, she accidentally runs into a boy named Keith.

In the crash, Misty drops her bag. Keith helps Misty to her feet and hands her back her stuff. Having lost the Farfetch’d, Misty and Keith part ways.

Upon returning, Misty sees that all her Pokémon are gone. To her horror, she realizes that Keith must have stolen them and that Farfetch’d was an accomplice.

Back at his camp, Keith and Farfetch’d admired their haul. Just then, they see Team Rocket pass by and decide to pull another grab. The two successfully outwit Jessie, James, and Meowth and snag their Pokémon.

Elsewhere, Misty and the boys track down Officer Jenny and go looking for Keith.

At the thief’s camp, Keith monologs that he and Farfetch’d have only had each other for the longest time. Although he doesn’t want to steal other people’s Pokémon, Keith feels it is the only way to survive. After all, according to Keith, he and Farfetch’d are too weak to fight. And while lost in thought, Keith fails to notice when Misty’s Psyduck escapes and wanders off.

After some time, Psyduck comes across Misty and the group. The problem is, Psyduck cannot remember where it had come from.

While this is happening, Team Rocket finds Keith and is determined to get their revenge. However, Keith gets the drop on them again, and they go their separate ways. But it isn’t long before Psyduck – miraculously – leads our heroes to Keith and Farfetch’d.

Cornered, Keith tries to explain that stealing was his only course of action and that there is no way he and Farfetch’d can fight. The group scoffs at this notion, explaining that Pokémon can only get stronger if given a chance. To demonstrate this, Ash challenges Keith to a battle.

Although Keith refuses, Farfetch’d insists on giving it a go. As the battle commences, Keith, who doesn’t have the slightest idea of Farfetch’d’s abilities, is stunned to see his friend not only hold his own but defeat Ash.

Before Ash can throw out Pikachu, Misty steps in and challenges Keith. The problem is, she forgot that the only Pokémon available to her is Psyduck. Nevertheless, Psyduck steps forward. After taking enough hits from Farfetch’d, Psyduck saves up enough psychic energy to blast the bird Pokémon into Keith, thus winning the fight.

Afterward, Keith promises to return all the Pokémon he stole. And with that taken care of, our heroes set off.

Pokémon Indigo League

Episode 50
Japanese Title: トゲピーはだれのもの!?
Romaji Title: Togepī wa Dare no Mono!?
English Title: Who Gets to Keep Togepi?
Episode Synopsis

Our heroes make it to the next Pokémon Center, and Nurse Joy informs Ash he has a message from Professor Oak. Ash calls the professor, who tells him an available update to the Pokédex.

After leaving the Pokémon Center, Ash, Misty, Brock, and Pikachu head to a restaurant for a quick break. They then begin discussing the mysterious egg they found back at the canyon. Each of the friends wonders what Pokémon will come out of it. But unbeknownst to them, Team Rocket hears their conversation, who decide to steal the egg.

Jessie, James, and Meowth manage to dupe the group and get hold of the egg. The villains then bring it back to their hideout, where they discuss their next step. Although Jessie and James are uninterested in properly caring for it, Meowth insists they do the thing right. Therefore, Meowth takes full control of looking over the egg.

The next day, Ash and his friends track down Team Rocket’s location. A fight breaks out, and the egg changes hands multiple times. The situation escalates, and the egg almost breaks. This snaps everyone back to their senses for a moment, just as the egg begins to hatch.

Excited to see what will emerge, Misty pushes her way for a closer look just as the new Pokémon opens its eyes. To everyone’s surprise, this Pokémon is utterly unknown in the Kanto region. But there is no time to dwell on the matter, and Ash and his friends run away.

Once escaped, the updated Pokédex informs our heroes that the Pokémon is a Togei but offers nothing else. Everyone’s adrenaline then subsides, and they begin to argue who will become Togei’s trainer. At the same time, Team Rocket catches up with the group, and Meowth throws his name into consideration.

To decide, everyone agrees to a Pokémon Battle Tournament.

The competition is fierce, but it is Ash who comes out on top in the end. However, when Ash goes to claim Togei, the little Pokémon has no interest in him – only Misty. The group realizes that since Misty was the first person Togei saw after its birth, the two formed an unbreakable bond. Therefore, Togepi goes to Misty.

Having settled the Togepi question, our heroes and their newest companion continue their journey.

Final Thoughts

While this batch of episodes had plenty of fun moments, there is only one thing we can conceivably talk about – the arrival of Togepi. As a kid, I remember this being such a huge moment since Togepi was the first Pokémon from Gen II to appear in the anime.

But watching this episode again as an adult, it surprised me how “soon” Togepi’s arrival came. Then again, even though it is hard to believe, we are well past the halfway point of the Indigo League.

Although I know there are plenty of iconic moments left in this series, the original dream team of Ash, Misty, Brock, Pikachu, and now Togepi has formed.

Thanks for following along with me. If you’ve seen this series and feel I am wrong in my descriptions, please let me know in the comments below. I wouldn’t want to put this show in an inaccurate light.
