A Couple of Cuckoos Episode 1 – Anime Hajime Updates

Episode 1 – “You’re going to Be My Boyfriend” – April 24, 2022

Episode Summary

There was a mistake at the hospital, and Nagi Umino was switched at birth. Sixteen years later, he has learned the truth and is about to meet his birth parents.

Along the way, Nagi sees a girl standing on the edge of a bridge. Panicked Nagi runs to prevent the worst, but he had completely misread the situation. The girl, an influencer named Erika Amano, was trying to stir up drama to get out of an arranged married set up by her parents.

In a spark of inspiration, Erika tells Nagi he should pretend to be her boyfriend. Although Nagi has no interest, Erika uses his misunderstanding to get him to agree. The two spend the rest of the day together, but ultimately, the rouse doesn’t work.

Just as they are about to part ways, a group of stacker fans of Erika corner the pair. However, Nagi easily scares them off. Erika thanks Nagi for protecting her and wishes he was the one she was actually marrying.

Realizing he is running late to meet his birth parent, Nagi rushes off. But when he gets there, the whole picture comes into focus. The parents who raised him have agreed to have Nagi marry the daughter of his birth parents, who turns out to be Erika herself.

Episode Impressions

I am going to go on a limb and say I do not think I will be enjoying this show. One episode in, and I can already see two problems I have with this series:

  1. It is predictable
  2. It will be uncomfortable

For reasons, I wasn’t a huge fan of having the main character’s backstory be a mistaken switch at birth (for those who don’t know, I am expecting my first kid at the time of this posting, and that is not a thought I want in my head). That is not a fault of this series, but it is an unfortunate start.

But don’t worry, there were plenty of other elements to A Couple of Cuckoos I’m almost positive will get out of hand fast. If you think I am referring to the arranged marriage, you’d be wrong. While that trope is certainly dated, the potential incest has me the most concerned.

I’m going to leave that right there. Until next week folks.
