***Warning, the following may contain spoilers for Non Non Biyori Repeat. Reader discretion is advised.***

Series Synopsis

Welcome back to the small peaceful town of Asahigaoka. Here the sky is vast, the air is clean, and the school is small.

  • Renge Miyauchi (voiced by Kotori Koiwai) is your typical first grader. She is curious about the many oddities of life around her. She also knows little and cares even less about the world outside her hometown.
  • Hotaru Ichijo (voiced by Rie Murakawa) is a transfer student from Tokyo. Though awed by the unfamiliar atmosphere, she grows accustomed to country life.
  • Sisters Natsumi and Komari Koshigaya (voiced respectively by Ayane Sakura and Kana Asumi) are the oldest of the group. The younger Natsumi is energetic and impulsive, while the older Komari is self-conscious about her short stature and does not do well with scary things.

These four continue to spend their time exploring their home, going to class, and having fun.

It’s incredible. After an entire year, so many things can change, and yet, nothing feels all that different.

Series Positives

Non Non Biyori Repeat (Repeat) stirred up feelings of comfort and nostalgia.

For Non Non Biyori, it’s not a question of which season is better. The two installments are nearly interchangeable; they fit so perfectly together.

And after all, don’t fix what’s not broken.

In terms of style and quality, everything was the same between seasons one and two. Since we talked about what was great about this series in the last review, we have thus talked about what’s great in Repeat.

It will sound like a cop-out, but you could copy-and-paste what I said last time here.

Repeat was as relaxing as ever. The scenery was still gorgeous — if not even a little crisper and more remarkable – and the characters remained funny and memorable.

However, after re-reading the last review, I noticed I made a horrible oversight. Although I (briefly) mention the main girls – Renge, Hotaru, Natsumi, and Komari – I said nothing about the supporting cast.

Allow me to remedy that.

Repeat definitely used its full roster more than the original, but the qualities were the same.

Without discussing everyone, let’s start with Kazuho Miyauchi (voiced by Kaori Nazuka), Renge’s eldest sister and teacher. On the surface, she was lazy, and, at times, Renge acted more mature than her. Kazuho’s students spend much of their school day, so as a result, Kazuho could often be found napping during class. On more than one occasion, Renge had to scold her sister to act more like a teacher.

And yet, behind the scenes, Kazuho worked hard for her students. In reality, she was a responsible, almost mother-like older sister to Renge and the other girls.

Next, there was Kaede Kagayama (voiced by Rina Sato), the local candy store owner. She liked to keep to herself but was usually pulled into the girls’ hijinks. Also, Kaede used to babysit Renge years ago, and the two have since had a close relationship.

These interactions between all the characters were among the many reasons this entire series is so pleasant.

Final Thoughts

This is one of those rare instances when I have absolutely nothing negative to say.

However, that doesn’t mean I’m happy.

When season one ended, there was still season two to fill the void. Now, there is nothing. I hope that changes one day.

Without a doubt, this is one of my favorite anime series I have ever come across. Therefore, you better believe Non Non Biyori Repeat has earned a recommendation.

But these were just my thoughts. What are yours? Have you seen this series? How would you advise Non Non Biyori Repeat? Leave a comment down below because I would love to hear what you have to say.

  1. Loved how season 2 interweaved with the timing of season 1, so that they both covered the same time period. Have you seen the just-finished season 3, Non Non Biyori Nonstop? In season 3, they finally progress in time, making it bittersweet for me. In fact, I want to but still haven’t worked up the courage to discuss season 3’s ep 11, the final seconds of which left me devastated, sobbing in my seat. (When your safest emotional refuge is violated, it hurts. . .) Still one of the greatest shows on air, even 3 seasons in.
