Anime Ichiban: The Top Ten Anime Comedies

Introduction

I try to review a broad mix of genres. I want my dramas, my horrors, my mysteries, romances, mechs and everything there is to see.

However, it’s undeniable. I am mostly drawn to comedies.

This list is dedicated to the things which make us laugh. After all, there are days when we need a bit of humor in our lives.

Here are the ten anime that did that better than any others. These are the shows that got us rolling and knocked us to the ground with uncontrollable hysteria.

Or, at least, they made me chuckle.

Without any further ado, here is my list of the Top Ten Anime Comedies.

10. Lucky Star

Bias warning: Lucky Star is the series that really got me into anime.

That said, I stand by its inclusion to the list.

This was an anime for anime fans, but don’t let that stop you. You will find plenty to laugh at in this series.

After many years, I can come back to Lucky Star if I want something to smile at.

9. Hidamari Sketch 365

I think every entry of the Hidamari Sketch series is a commendable comedy for their own reasons. The dialogue was well written, the characters were fun, and the overall atmosphere was an outstanding mix of some truly hilarious situations.

Hidamari Sketch 365 was just the strongest of the bunch.

365, like all its fellow installments, was able to find the perfect balance between style and substance. The results speak for themselves.

8. Hanamaru Youchien

This show is one of the cutest there is; along with being one of the funniest.

Hanamaru Youchien never forgets that its characters are mostly little children and the show adjusts the style of its comedy accordingly. This series deals with semi-older themes and displays them through a child’s perspective.

I’ve worked with kids in the past, and I can say that things are not always as peaceful or as easy going as were the situations depicted in Hanamaru Youchien. But the thing this show did get right was how amusing a child’s outlook can be to an adult.

7. Seitokai Yakuindomo

In my Seitokai Yakuindomo review, I said there was a noticeable and unfortunate lack of laugh out loud moments.

I openly admit I was dead wrong.

This show was hilarious, and there were plenty of moments that had me in stitches

As my first ever review, I didn’t do this series justice, but that isn’t the reason it’s on this list. No, Seitokai Yakuindomo is, indeed, one of the funniest anime I have ever seen.

6. Non Non Biyori / Non Non Biyori Repeat

I couldn’t bring myself to determine which of the two seasons was better. They were both equally amazing.

Therefore, I’m treating them a single entry.

Non Non Biyori is one of my all-time favorites, and it really was legitimately funny. I still come back to this series every now and then.

5. Nagasarete Airantou

Nagasarete Airantou got its charm through its scenario.

The island and its residents had an established community. While it might have been silly and completely out of the ordinary, it worked.

Given how long this series was, it was something special. Few other shows had me laughing as hard and as long as Nagasarete Airantou did.

4. Mitsudomoe

To read my full Mitsudomoe review, please click HERE.

Mitsudomoe was destructive, a bit violent, and all around hilarious.

When you come right down to it, it was all thanks to the three Marui sisters, Mitsuba, Futaba, and Hitoha. This trio played off one another so incredibly well.

When these girls were together, they crafted many outstandingly funny moments.

3. Azumanga Daioh

If there was one series I knew was going to make this list, it was Azumanga Daioh

This is the character comedy of character comedies. The humor was wholly reliant on the personalities of its cast.

I have nothing but praise to give this show, and it’s one I am always willing to throw on at a moment’s notice.

2. Binbougami ga

Binbougami ga was loud, fast, and off-the-wall insane. And I loved every second of it.

This was a character comedy where everyone was a bit greedy, selfish, and egotistical. There were no good-guy characters. But that was was why this series worked.

And at its core was the duo of Ichiko and Momiji. They carried this show. Whenever they were on screen, they were what made Binbougami ga such a treat.

1. Nichijou

Great visuals, fantastic writing, interesting characters are all important in a comedy.

However, they are ultimately meaningless when a series is not willing to commit to the joke. No anime has ever taken that notion as far as Nichijou did.

Comedy isn’t about high class or intelligent humor. It’s not about how absurd or outlandish a situation can be. It’s not about being low brow or immature.

It has always been about what will make you laugh.

And Nichijou, more than any other anime, made me laugh.

Final Thoughts

And there we have it, my Top Ten Anime Comedies.

  1. There is a really clear theme in the shows you included here (beyond them just being comedy anime). A couple I haven’t seen so I’ll have to check them out later.
