Episode 1 – “The Remedial Student and the Witch of the Staff” – April 8, 2022

Episode Summary
The Kingdom of Wenias is a haven for magic and magic users. It is also the home of the prestigious Royal Academy of Magic, where the next generation of witches and warlocks hone their craft. This school is where the best gather to study, and then there is Saybil.
Despite his enrollment, Saybil is the lowest-ranked student at the academy and has difficulty performing the simplest of spells. Thus, rumors spread quickly through the students when Headmaster Albus summons Saybil to her office.
While going to see the headmaster, Saybilcomes across a loud and pushy little witch, Loux Krystas, the Dawn Witch. It becomes clear that Loux is a persistent nuisance for the school, but she has a way of barging her way into the center of attention. Therefore, she invites herself to sit in Saybil’s meeting with Headmaster Albus.

To Saybil’s surprise, instead of expelling him, the headmaster puts him in charge of establishing a town on the outskirts of the kingdom, where witches are still at war with the Church. But, Saybil will only have three years to accomplish his task. Should he fail, his memory of both magic and the academy will be sealed away.
Intrigued by this mission, Loux volunteers herself to be Saybil’s guide. In exchange for her help, Loux asks for knowledge concerning the mysterious book, The Grimoire of Zero.
With the deal struck, Saybil sets off. Along with Loux, the academy’s top student, Hort joins Saybil’s party, as well as the proud but skilled Kudo. However, Kudo does not accept Saybil being on this journey and decides to go forward on his own.
Almost immediately, Saybil, Loux, and Hort get word of Church agents conducting witch hunts in the area. To all their horror, they find evidence that Kudo has become a target.

Episode Impressions
I mean, the animation was nice.
After this first episode, I don’t have much of an opinion concerning The Dawn of the Witch; it did little to establish any sense of personality. Well, beyond several surface-level character traits.
That said, I suppose I am interested enough to find out how our hero party handles a fight. From the looks of it, we should be getting our first conflict in the next episode. Maybe then we will have something more to talk about.
