Episode 3 – “Misfortune, Followed by Sunshine” – April 24, 2022

Episode Summary
Yuu manages to secure movie tickets and is quick to invite Shikimori out on a date.
Remembering past outings, Yuu does all he can to ensure things won’t be interrupted by misfortune. And baring a few unexpected mishaps, his date with Shikimori goes off without an issue. That is until Yuu tries to treat his girlfriend to lunch. Somehow, even with his precautions, Yuu manages to lose his wallet.
Thinking they might have to call an end to the date, Yuu and Shikimori run into Yuu’s parents. Hearing about the situation, Yuu’s mom and dad gladly invite Shikimori over for dinner.
After the meal, Shikimori and Yuu’s mom find a moment to talk. Yuu’s mother thanks Shikimori for staying by her son’s side even when his natural bad luck flairs up. Shikimori reassures Yuu’s mother that she has never seen Yuu as anything less than someone precious. She will do what she can to protect him.

Episode Impressions
Although this series still failed to be anything spectacular, this episode was the most stand-out so far.
We got more insight into Yuu’s past and how his misfortune has actually been a legitimate issue; it is simply a character quirk. In that same vein, Shikimori began to distinguish herself as someone more than an overused gimmick (cool and cute have existed in anime for decades).
That being said, I would like to know why Shikimori developed feelings for Yuu. Thanks to this episode, we have a pretty good sense about the reverse – why Yuu likes Shikimori. However, what gravitated Shikimori to Yuu remains a mystery.
If this series wants to build up its status, that is definitely one way it could go.
