Episode 3 – “The Demon Lord’s Party” – April 20, 2022

Episode Summary
The headmaster of the Magic Acadamey asks Ard Meteor to perform in an upcoming event, one in which the queen herself will attend. Although Ard initially refuses, he eventually breaks and agrees.
While thinking of some way to avoid causing a scene, Ginny Fin de Salvan comes up to Ard and invites him on a date. Seeing no reason to refuse, Ard agrees. Overhearing this, Ireena Lits de Olhyde jumps in and includes herself in the outing (since Ginny thinks Ard would look cooler with a harem surrounding him, she doesn’t have a problem with this arrangement).
The trio head out on their date, but they overhear a conspiracy to kidnap the queen midway through. Unable to ignore this, Ard, followed by the Ireena and Ginny, follow the villains to an underground labyrinth.

Seeing where they have been led, Ard realizes that the plot to kidnap the queen was a front to lure his friends in. It turns out the actual target was either Ireena or Ginny. However, Ard’s overwhelming power allows him to easily best his enemies.
Unfortunately for Ard, there was no way to end this affair without being the center of attention for the whole town.
As a reward for his fantastic work, the queen summons Ard and his friends to her court. There, she grants Ard the title of pentagon mage and enlists the trio into the elite fighting force, the Queen’s Shadow.

Episode Impressions
Yes, this series is a typical overpowered-protagonist story; there is no getting around that.
Be that as it may, there is one quality to these shows that doesn’t let me refute them outright. If the protagonist can utterly humble an overconfident asshat, I find that immensely satisfying. Demon Lord did that brilliantly in this episode.
So, I keep this series’s status as Good for the time being. Heck, if this show continues to do this, it might very well make it to the end. Sure, it will be a junk-food anime, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
