The Top Anime of 2019 Part 1 – Entries 20 to 11

Even with giving myself the wiggle room to choose the top twenty anime of 2019, I found it challenging to settle on these finalists. Although this year had its fair share of setbacks and problems, there were still a lot of shows that were incredibly fun and enjoyable to watch. Therefore, I highly encourage everyone to check out a series’ own review and let that serve as a better overview of its merits, rather than relying on whether or not it made this list.

That said, I assure you, the twenty anime that were selected have earned their spot. I stand by each and every one of these shows’ rankings, and it goes without saying, they all have my recommendation (assuming you hold my opinion with any weight).

So, without further adieu, here are my entries twenty through eleven of the best anime of 2019.

20. Senryu Girl

Here is proof that content, not length, is the mark of a quality series. Senryu Gjrl was a lovely romance that had with it, one of the best couples I have come across in a long time.

For some reason, this series was limited to a short-form release when it could have easily been a full-length show. Regardless, what Senryu Girl did in the amount of time it had was nothing short of outstanding.

19. A Certain Scientific Accelerator

Since the Academy City series can’t rely on its more extensive flagship, A Certain Magical Index, how could we ever expect a spin-off to do any better? Well, where Index insists on adding details upon details without allowing anything to breathe, something like A Certain Scientific Accelerator can come along and give one hundred percent of its focus to what actually makes this franchise an exciting idea.

Side note; as an anime fan, this was one of my most anticipated shows of the year, and I am happy to say it delivered.

18. Fire Force

If you need convincing that a series can tell a meaningful story without giving up a sense of pure excitement, then you need not look any further than Fire Force.

This series stepped on the accelerator in its first episodes and never took it off. From beginning to end, this story went at a hundred miles an hour and never failed to miss a beat. With great characters, fantastic animation, and hilarious humor, Fire Force was certainly a high point of the year.

17. One Punch Man 2nd Season

I won’t sit here and say One Punch Man 2nd Season was better than the original. I will, however, say it was as good as the original, even if it puts me at odds with people.

This series only needed to do one thing, and that was to keep the magic created by its predecessor alive. And to that end, it more than succeeded. Boasting the same level of unbridled excitement, One Punch Man 2nd Season was everything you could expect out of a highly anticipated sequel.

16. Boogiepop wa Warawanai

Time has only been kind to the Boogiepop series. Granted, I never expected something like Boogiepop wa Warawanai to ever be a thing, but it was, and it was great.

With nearly twenty years between the first and second series, you would think something would have been lost along the way. Instead, I must say that Boogiepop is stronger than it has ever been.

15. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime

This was the first 2019 series I reviewed, and it kicked the year off well. Little did I know how many more isekai anime would be following it, and what this show did was set a respectively high bar. Of course, having one of the best characters of the year, as well as one of the best isekai protagonist ever, didn’t hurt things either.

I cannot wait to see the continuation of the That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime story.

14. Kaguya-sama Love is War

Here was a romantic comedy that didn’t skimp on the romance, but still went all-in with the comedy. With the makings of a paint-by-numbers anime to start, Kaguya-sama Love is War counted on triggering people’s expectations before pulling the rug out from under them.

This series had a main couple that was always happy to play games of mental chess with one another, but neither of them was ever able to completely dominated by the other. Through this back and forth, and the frequent hilarious one-line, Kaguya-sama Love is War found a way to be uniquely its own.

13. Mob Psycho 100 II

Where One Punch Man 2nd Season was as good as its predecessor, the other sequel to another of manga creator One’s stories succeeded in actually surpassing its original.

Mob Psycho 100 II brought everything to ahead. This series was not afraid to go big and loud and let things break. This season took advantage of the foundation set by the first and focused more on the story and characters and less on its insanity. Albeit, there were moments when things got a bit crazy.

12. Ascendance of a Bookworm

For me to rank a show the twelfth best of the year after I initially thought I was going to hate, that it is a pretty big accomplishment if I did say so myself. Although I can’t deny that I still don’t see why Ascendance of a Bookworm had to be an isekai anime, when we disregard that, this series knew how to be thoroughly engaging.

There was a lot more to this story than what was on its surface. And for a fantasy narrative that didn’t have any action, it was impossible to put down.

11. Vinland Saga

If you never thought there would be a Japanese anime about the age of Vikings, well, you wouldn’t have been the only one.

Vinland Saga was, as its name suggests, was a saga. Having some of the most exciting action sequences of the year, with plenty of absurdity to go around, this series was the definition of entertaining.

I’m not sure if this story could work in a continuation, but if one ever does come, it will have some pretty big shoes to fill.

Final Thoughts

And to think, this was the bottom half of the top twenty.

Every entry on this list proved to be entertaining, brilliant, and fascinating. When I was watching each of these shows, I was reminded of why I enjoy anime. These were truly some of the best of the year.

However, there are still ten better.
