The countdown begins.

There is so much anime in a given year, and 2020 was something else. For many, anime was the escape they needed to get through lockdowns and quarantines. The pandemic has had a far-reaching hand, and the anime world did not go unaffected. There were delays, hiatus, and reschedules. Nevertheless, when we needed a break from it all, there was always a show to watch.

2020 also saw the unmistakable rise and solidification of series releasing onto online streaming sites like Netflix and Crunchyroll. This trend has opened the floodgates to more adventurous stories, and it is now a factor in the viewing experience.

As we look to 2021, which is already demonstrating great promise, let us remember where we have been.

The following is the first half of Anime Hajime’s top anime of 2020, 20 to 11.


20. ID:Invaded

Two Japanese castaways find themselves in the American West at the dawn of the automobile age. They enter a car race across the continent and face outlaws and other over-the-top characters.


18. TONIKAWA: Over the Moon For You

The one of the best romance anime of 2020.

TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You tells of an unlikely couple who suddenly find themselves as newlyweds. Although their marriage circumstances are unique, the two quickly fall for one another in this charming little love story.


17. Fire Force Season 2

The story continues, and it is just as good as before.

Fire Force Season 2 sees our heroes of Fire Force Company 8 face-off against those who wish to set the world aflame. The same great animation, characters, and story return to bring us a spectacularly satisfying follow-up.


16. Somali and the Forest Spirit

A fantastically heartwarming father-daughter tale, Somali and the Forest Guardian should not be missed.

An ancient forest golem comes across an abandoned human girl. The two begin a journey to discover the girl’s people while navigating a demon-filled world that would happily eat any human they find.


15. Moriarty the Patriot

An exceedingly excellent twist on a classic villain, Moriarty the Patriot is smart, dark, and thrilling.

William James Moriarty begins his underworld empire as the world’s first crime consultant. Through his brilliant intellect, he offers clients the chance to right the wrongs done to them. 


14. Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina

Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina is bright, colorful, and simple – in a good way.

The young witch Elaina is on the adventure of a lifetime. She uses her magical prowess to see the world and offer a hand when it is needed. But she never stays in one place longer than necessary.


13. Akudama Drive

Akudama Drive is a thrilling and thoroughly entertaining sci-fi story filled with violence, backstabbing, and manipulation.

Swindler gets caught up with a group of highly dangerous criminals tasked with an impossible mission. To survive, Swinder must do and say what she must, even if it means putting a target on her back.


12. Fruits Basket 2nd Season

With some of these entries, it is hard to believe this is only the bottom half; we still have ten to go. And the best ten at that.
