Episode 5 – “Jolly Times at the River!” – May 8, 2022

Episode Summary
Yuu, Shikimori, and their friends arrive for their much-anticipated river trip, and the group wastes no time.
Despite Yuu’s notorious luck, the weather is perfect, and the water is beautiful. Everyone even realizes that Yuu is a fantastic cook and Shikimori, despite being brilliant at most other things, is not. Nevertheless, Yuu is happy to support his girlfriend because although she made something inedible, she gave it her all just for him.
The river trip is quite an eventful affair; Yuu even was instrumental in saving a young girl who got caught up in the current. Granted, Shikimori had to jump in a save Yuu right after, but it was still impressive.
After a fun-fill day, the friends jump on the train home, exhausted and happy.

Episode Impressions
The best episode of the series so far. A couple more of these and Shikimori might be able to pull itself out of its mediocrity.
This episode worked so well because it gave Yuu a chance to do something. He demonstrated his cooking skills, he was the hero for once, and his bad luck didn’t have that much of an effect on the trip. Heck, there was even some hardcore flirting between Yuu and Shikimori.
It didn’t feel gimmicky for the first time in this show, and I really appreciated that.
